In Spring 2016, U.S. and Canadian gardeners get their chance to grow the charming soft pink English Rose that David Austin himself calls "possibly the best rose we’ve ever bred." Other introductions include ‘The Poet’s Wife’, Austin’s first yellow English Rose introduction since ‘Charles Darwin’ in 2003; and ‘The Lady of the Lake’, Austin’s fourth repeat-blooming short rambler rose.

There’s a special pleasure in cutting flowers fresh from your own garden. That pleasure is tenfold when the flowers you cut grow in such abundance all season that taking some for the vase still leaves plenty in garden beds. Michael Marriott, longtime technical director of David Austin Roses in Albrighton, UK, offers tips on growing, cutting, caring for and arranging roses fresh from the garden.

English Roses are known for fragrance. Recently, David Austin’s technical director and senior rosarian, Michael Marriott catalogued a compendium of the breeder’s top fragrant varieties.
“Rose perfumes entrance us,” says Marriott. “One whiff can excite instant memory recall. Fragrance is so vivid a sensation that it summons up a specific rose variety with remarkable precision, often including recall of the exact time and place when one first encountered it.”
This downloadble two-sided handout lists Marriot's choices of the most exquisite English Roses roses based, above all, on their fragrances.
