According to the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center, www.bulb.com, a good rule of thumb is to plant flower bulbs when the average fall nighttime temperatures in your area reach and stay in the range of 40? F to 50 degrees F or 4 degrees C to 10 degrees C. At that point the soil temperature should be just perfect for tucking bulbs in for their winter’s rest underground.
If you’ve purchased bulbs early and will plant later in the fall, store the bulbs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once planting conditions become optimal, plant them as soon as possible. The main thing is to plant them!
